Melbourne & Around

After reviewing the past few trips whereby I used both film and digital cameras, I realised that the film photos clearly stood out for their vibrance, colour and overall analog like feel.

So in early August I took a leap of faith and ditched my DSLR for my film cameras (Mamiya 6 medium format rangefinder, Yashicamat 124G medium format TLR and a Bessa R3A) and went to Melbourne for a 10 day self-drive holiday with Larissa.

However, film has it’s issues I can tell you that. The first being cost, sure a film camera (nowadays) is cheaper than a digital camera, but film costs add up. My medium format shots cost me about $1 each time I fire off a single shot, and I fired off >200 shots!

I also had one of my cameras screw up on me, my Bessa R3A. On my last roll of film it shot the first 4 frames, afterwhich the film didn’t advance at all for the next 30 frames. Meaning to say I had 30 photos overlapped into one frame.

All that said, after I got back the processed slides and film from the lab, I still had to spend about 3-4 days scanning them, adjusting the colours and so on. Really really tedious but the results speak for themselves.

We drove from Melbourne City up to Falls Creek to see snow (and there was A LOT of snow) for the first time in my life, then went to Wilsons Prom to hunt (with my camera) down wild kangaroos and finally to Great Ocean Road to check out the surf (too cold to actually surf of course).

This was the only usable image from my last roll shot on my R3A.

You can check out more photos I took while in the land down under here.

You can also purchase some of the photos I have selected from my gallery store here.
